About This Hike

There is nothing quite like watching the sun rise over the Dolomite peaks from a high alpine meadow. This guided sunrise hike takes you through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Renon area, starting in the pre-dawn darkness and arriving at the summit viewpoint just as the first golden rays illuminate the surrounding peaks. The experience of seeing the world wake up from above is something that stays with you long after you return to the valley.

Our certified alpine guide Thomas Gruber has been leading groups through these mountains for over eighteen years. He knows every trail, every shortcut, and every hidden viewpoint. Along the way, he shares his deep knowledge of local geology, alpine flora and fauna, and the history of mountain farming in the region. Thomas has an extraordinary ability to make the natural world come alive through his stories and observations.

The Route

We depart from the parking lot at Rifugio Panorama at five thirty in the morning, equipped with headlamps for the initial section through the forest. The first hour follows a well-marked trail through dense spruce and larch forest, climbing steadily at a moderate pace. As we emerge above the tree line around six thirty, the eastern sky begins to lighten and the outline of the Dolomite peaks becomes visible against the dawn sky.

The middle section crosses beautiful open alpine meadows dotted with early spring wildflowers. In April, you can expect to see crocuses, gentians and primroses beginning to emerge from the retreating snowline. We pause at strategic viewpoints to catch our breath and take photographs as the light changes minute by minute. The colors of an alpine sunrise are unlike anything you see at lower elevations.

We reach the summit viewpoint at approximately seven fifteen, just in time for sunrise. On a clear morning, the panorama extends from the Ortler massif in the west to the pale towers of the Dolomites in the east. We spend about thirty minutes at the top, enjoying the view and a simple mountain breakfast of fresh bread, local cheese, speck and hot tea prepared by Thomas.

Important: This hike requires good physical fitness and experience on mountain trails. The elevation gain of 850 meters over 6 kilometers is sustained and the early morning start means you need adequate rest the night before. Proper hiking boots with ankle support are mandatory. The event may be postponed in case of adverse weather conditions.

What To Bring

Wear layered clothing suitable for temperatures ranging from five to fifteen degrees Celsius. A warm fleece or down jacket is essential for the summit stop. Bring a waterproof outer layer, a hat and gloves for the early morning chill, sunglasses and sunscreen for the descent, a headlamp with fresh batteries, at least one liter of water, and any personal medication. Hiking poles are recommended but not required. We provide the mountain breakfast and hot beverages at the summit.
